There’s a fine line between living life and just merely existing.
Life can sometimes feel monotonous, but adding a sense of thrill and excitement to your routine doesn’t have to be complicated.
Unfortunately, it’s our daily habits that keep us stuck in the mundane, draining the thrill and excitement from our lives.
Here’s the good news, though: A few simple changes can make all the difference!
If you’re ready to inject some fun and spontaneity into your day-to-day life, it’s time to say goodbye to these seven habits holding you back:
1) Staying in your comfort zone
There’s something to be said for comfort and familiarity—they bring a sense of security, a feeling of being grounded.
Yet, they’re also the biggest culprits behind a life that’s more vanilla than Neapolitan.
Why? Because it’s in the comfort zone where we stop challenging ourselves.
We stop pushing boundaries, stop learning new things, and stop taking risks so this, in turn, keeps us from experiencing the thrill and excitement that come with stepping into the unknown.
It’s like always choosing the same flavor of ice cream—sure, it’s good, but there’s a whole world of tastes out there that you’re missing out on.
Start embracing new experiences and challenges and you’ll be surprised at the thrill it brings to your life.
Every great adventure starts with one step outside your comfort zone.
2) Overplanning
I’m a self-confessed planner: For me, there’s an unquestionable comfort in knowing what’s going to happen, when it’s going to happen, and how it’s going to happen.
Unfortunately, this habit of overplanning took away the element of surprise and spontaneity from my life.
One day, I decided to do something different: I took a spontaneous road trip with no destination in mind.
And guess what? It was one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life!
Not knowing where I was headed, stopping at random places, meeting new people—it was an adventure in the truest sense.
This newfound thrill made me realize that while planning is essential, overplanning can strip you of the joy of unexpected moments.
Word of advice: Allow life to surprise you every once in a while.
3) Digital dependency
In today’s world, our lives are intrinsically linked to technology. Our phones, laptops, and tablets have become extensions of ourselves. While they offer a level of convenience and connection unparalleled by anything else, they also have a downside.
Research, from the National Institutes of Health, has shown that excessive screen time can lead to increased feelings of anxiety and depression, negatively impacting our overall quality of life; it also robs us of the chance to experience life in its raw form, to connect with nature, and to form genuine human relationships.
Try reducing your screen time as much as possible by going for a walk without your phone, reading a physical book instead of an e-book, or having a face-to-face conversation instead of a virtual one.
You’d be surprised at the joy these simple activities can bring.
4) Neglecting self-care
In the hustle and bustle of daily life, it’s easy to put our needs on the back burner; from skipping meals and compromising on sleep to ignoring our mental health, we often neglect self-care in the pursuit of productivity.
But, here’s the catch: You can’t truly enjoy life if you’re constantly running on empty.
Investing in self-care can significantly enhance your mood, energy, and overall outlook towards life, making everyday experiences more enjoyable.
Self-care could simply be taking a few minutes each day to meditate, taking regular breaks during work or even ensuring you’re drinking enough water.
Remember, when you take care of yourself, you’re better equipped to add that much-needed thrill and excitement to your life.
5) Fear of failure
For a long time, I held myself back from trying new things, afraid that I might fail.
Every time an opportunity came up, my mind would immediately conjure up the worst-case scenarios; instead of seeing potential adventures, all I could see were potential pitfalls.
This fear of failure kept me from experiencing so many things and left my life feeling rather flat and uneventful—until one day.
I decided to face my fear head-on: I took up a hobby I’d been wanting to try but was too afraid to—painting.
To be honest, I was terrible at it in the beginning but the joy and thrill of creating something with my own hands, of seeing myself improve little by little, were incomparable.
Letting go of my fear of failure allowed me to explore new horizons and brought a sense of excitement I hadn’t felt in a long time.
Each failure is just a stepping stone to success, and the journey is always more thrilling than standing still.
6) Living in the past or future
It’s easy to dwell on past mistakes or worry about future uncertainties but, when we do this, we miss out on the present moment—the only moment we truly have control over.
Living in the present means fully engaging with what’s happening right now—it could be savoring your morning coffee, feeling the breeze on your face, or just simply enjoying a conversation with a friend.
These moments, though seemingly small, are where life truly happens.
Let go of past regrets and future worries, and start living in the present.
7) Not taking time for adventure
If there’s one thing you should know, it’s this: Adventure doesn’t happen by accident because you have to make time for it.
It’s easy to get caught up in the endless loop of work, home, sleep, and repeat, but life is so much more than that—it’s about exploring new places, trying new things, and meeting new people too.
Make a conscious effort to schedule some adventure time into your routine, like trying a new recipe, going for a hike on the weekend, or planning a trip to a place you’ve never been before.
Get out there and start creating your own adventures—it’s the surest way to add more joy and excitement to your everyday life!
Final thoughts: It’s in your hands
Ultimately, the thrill and excitement in life comes down to one thing—choice.
Life is a grand adventure, but it’s up to us to choose to embark on it—making conscious decisions to step out of our comfort zones, embrace new experiences, and let go of the habits that hold us back.
The American adventure author Jack London once said, “The proper function of man is to live, not to exist.”
This sentiment resonates deeply in our quest for a more vibrant and thrilling everyday life.
Whether it’s picking up a new hobby, taking a spontaneous trip, or embracing the present moment, the power to make life exciting is entirely in your hands.
By letting go of these seven habits, we create space for endless possibilities and adventures.
It’s a journey of unexpected twists and turns, but that’s exactly where the magic happens—after all, life is far too short to settle for anything less than extraordinary.
