Hannah Kobayashi, missing Hawaii woman, spotted crossing into Mexico before her father’s tragic suicide during his relentless search for her

Hannah Kobayashi, a 30-year-old woman from Hawaii who was reported missing, was spotted crossing the border into Mexico. This sighting occurred just days before her father tragically took his own life during his desperate search for her. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has now reclassified her case as a ‘voluntary missing person’, indicating they believe she willingly fled to Mexico to disconnect from the world.

The LAPD came to this conclusion after a meticulous review of security footage from the border near Tijuana, about 145 miles from LAX. It showed Kobayashi alive between November 12 and 13, nearly a day after her disappearance and about 11 days before her father’s tragic suicide. The footage clearly depicts Kobayashi crossing the border on foot, according to the LAPD.

Authorities further detailed their investigation, stating that they relied on ‘witness interviews, reviewed video surveillance’ and close collaboration with local law enforcement to accurately piece together what transpired. Kobayashi willingly departed LAX after checking her bag for a connecting flight to New York from Maui. She then proceeded to Union Station on November 11 where she used her passport to purchase a bus ticket headed for the border.

By the next morning, she boarded the bus to San Ysidro, California, before making her way across the border. The LAPD has clarified that there is no evidence of human trafficking or foul play involved in Kobayashi’s disappearance. They suggest that she seemed intent on leading a less complicated life.

According to the police department, “before departing Maui, Kobayashi expressed a desire to step away from modern connectivity.” She is now considered a ‘voluntary missing person’, as authorities believe she made a conscious decision to disappear and start afresh. This classification is an attempt to respect ‘her right to privacy’, the LAPD added.

The police will not extend their investigation into Mexico but will be notified if Kobayashi returns to America. They have encouraged her to contact the police or the American Embassy in Mexico to confirm her wellbeing.

Family members have yet to comment on this new information that suggests Hannah may have fled south for the Mexican border. However, sources close to NBC Los Angeles stated they do not suspect any foul play in her disappearance at this time.

This case brings to the forefront the complexities of investigations surrounding ‘voluntary missing persons’, a category where individuals are believed to have willingly disappeared. It’s a delicate balance between respecting personal liberties and ensuring public safety. The LAPD’s decision to not extend their investigation into Mexico is on par with these concerns, demonstrating a mindful approach towards respecting Kobayashi’s privacy rights.

However, this approach does not sit well with everyone. Kobayashi’s family members, for instance, have expressed doubts about the LAPD’s findings. Kobayashi’s sister, Sydni, has contested the claims that Hannah intentionally missed her flight to New York City – something she asserts Hannah would never do. She also raised concerns about Hannah’s uncharacteristic behavior leading up to her disappearance, suggesting that her sister’s text messages felt as if they were being controlled by someone else.

The family’s skepticism towards the police findings is amplified by the tragic aftermath of Hannah’s disappearance – their father taking his own life after an extensive search for his missing daughter. This tragic event adds a layer of urgency and poignancy to the case. Sydni firmly believes that even if her sister was trying to go off-grid, she would have reached out after learning of their father’s death.
