What Is a Digital Asset?

A digital asset is a computer file containing “unstructured” data—such as an image, a video or audio clip—or “structured” data—such as a document or spreadsheet—that has been tagged with descriptive information. This “metadata” helps define such assets as the cover, chapters, author’s bio and pictures in a book. Then, it helps make it possible to retrieve and reuse such digital assets. The AOL Time Warner Book Group creates about three-dozen types of assets from a book such as James Patterson’s Four Blind Mice.
